Q & A with David Gurney
Your Favorite Waterfowl Gun?
I have enjoyed both Franchi Affinity(s) I have owned. I really like the Franchi 3.5 elite waterfowl I shoot now so that’s probably my favorite.
Preferred Waterfowl Ammo?
Depends on if it’s a high volume or low volume shoot.
If we are going to shoot 3 or 4 boxes that day I’ll get the cheapest steel I can.
If we may only get a couple of opportunities to harvest a good Tungsten load.
Current Duck Call?
I have a cactus and Green epoxy custom duck call from Driftless Customs.
Current Goose Call?
I have a matching cactus and Green epoxy Goose call from Driftless Customs.
Your Choice of Waders?
The only company who makes waders to match my hardcore clothing is Tidewe. So I have a pair of their zip up waders and I absolutely love them. Coming from neoprene to breathable waders is a game changer.
Favorite Brand of Decoys?
GHG
Tangle free waterfowl foam filled
Avian X
My custom foam filled flocked scoter and Eider decoys.
What is Your Go-To Camo Pattern for Waterfowl Hunting?
Actually my Father and I have a matching Camo set from Hardcore Waterfowl in the Veil Avayde pattern and it’s warm and waterproof and has served us well.
But if I’m being totally honest. My favorite hunting clothing is my Hey dudes, blue jeans, and a random camo top. Means the weather is still above freezing and the snow hasn’t shown up yet.
What Species of Dog do You Hunt Waterfowl With?
Sadly I don’t have a dog. If I did it would be a black lab or a German short hair pointer.
Who Took You on Your First Waterfowl Hunt?
Ever since I was a kid I enjoyed shooting birds. Just ask my great grandma.
I worked with a younger man and he and I became friends. He told me about his dad and hunting Geese and ducks. Told me his dad would love to take me out hunting.
So one day at work the boss was riding my ass and pissed me off. I decided in that moment that I wasn’t going to be coming in the next day. Luke ( the kid I worked with) had contacted his Dad (Norman) and he had found birds on his scout that morning and I was going to go on my first goose hunt. I had to have been 23 or so.
I wake up the next morning (early) and drive to Norman’s house. Mind you I have nothing but a license and hope. Norman lets me use a spare gun and shoot his ammo. We hook up to the trailer of decoys and head to the field. It’s raining cats and dogs. We get to the spot and it’s raining even harder. Norman looks at me and is skeptical about setting up. He goes to start talking and a small flock locks onto the spot and is coming in. We decided to do a quick setup and give it a shot.
We set up the deeks and layout blinds. Not more than ten minutes later a group of 4 honkers comes in. We both shoot twice and just like that an addiction is formed.
Norman and I hunted together for the next 5 years until we had a falling out.
We may not speak anymore but I am forever grateful for the knowledge of the area he passed along to me.
In short, a friend named Norman introduced me when I was about 23.
What has been your favorite waterfowl hunt to date?
UWC Adventures Mexico West Coast Hunt
Dream Waterfowl Trip?
My dream waterfowl hunt is the next one me and my Dad go on and bring my oldest boy. Don’t know what it looks like just yet but I can’t wait to share a blind with the Boy and Dad.
